Discover Lima’s fascinating history during a colonial tour through the historic city center, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Admire the artwork at San Francisco Monastery and enter the catacombs. View the elegant Cathedral at Plaza de Armas and visit the Casa de Aliaga – former house of the conquistador Jeronimo de Aliaga y Ramirez – where the energy of colonial and republican Lima comes to life. Late this afternoon, return to your hotel for a group included educational lecture. Later, get to know your fellow travelers at a welcome dinner featuring artfully crafted Peruvian dishes.

Guardianship and Mental Health: Navigating the Role of Guardian for Adults with Psychiatric Disabilities

This CLE presentation will provide attorneys with a comprehensive overview of the legal, ethical, and practical challenges involved in serving as guardian for adults with mental health disorders. The session will explore the delicate balance between protecting the ward and honoring their right to autonomy by emphasizing the principle of the least restrictive alternative. Attendees will learn about the different types of guardianship—full, limited, and emergency—and how courts assess capacity and tailor guardianship to individual needs. The presentation will also cover available mental health resources, including psychiatric advance directives, supported decision-making models, and community-based services that can support long-term care planning. Special attention will be given to crisis intervention strategies for wards experiencing acute psychiatric episodes, and how guardians can collaborate with healthcare providers and social services to ensure safety while preserving dignity. This session is ideal for attorneys representing guardians, serving as guardians ad litem, or advising families navigating the complexities of mental health and disability law.

By the end of the presentation, participants will have a roadmap for transforming their solo practice into a tech-enabled, time-saving operation.

Murdered for Millions: The story of the boy genius who hired a hit man

Jeff Hammerschmidt

Dana Ewell and Joel Radovcich were college students at Santa Clara University. Dana hired Joel to murder his entire family; his mother, father and sister, to inherit the estate. In today’s dollars, the estate would be valued at more than $18,000,000. The Ewell family was a prominent family who lived in Central California. Joel gunned down all three family members with an assault rifle that had a homemade silencer on it as they arrived home on an Easter Sunday. The entire trial was broadcast live on the radio. Mr. Hammerschmidt was one of two prosecutors on the case. The case has been featured on numerous national crime shows. Netflix has expressed interest in running a six-part series on the case.

Life on Lake Titicaca: Floating Islands and Ancestral Stories

Spend today getting to know the locals. Enjoy a morning cruise to the floating islands of the Uros people of Lake Titicaca. Experience walking on the island’s spongy surface made from compacted beds of tortora reeds and meet the locals, learning about their history and lifestyle. Later, cruise to a local rustic village for a home-hosted meal and swap stories with Peruvian families before visiting the mystical Chullpas de Sillustani – an archaeological area boasting 13th-century funerary monuments.
