Lawyers in Film —the Good, the Bad and the Unethical (2 Ethics)
Jim & Meredith Bannon
Countless films across the years are based on controversies in legal ethics. We’ll watch parts of several movies, including 12 Angry Men, My Cousin Vinny, and many more. Then, we’ll dive into the analysis and enjoy discussing it as a group. For example, did the characters actually violate the law? Were their acts defensible, even excusable? How might they have better protected themselves? And come with your own favorite ethical quandaries from film.

Identifying Traumatic Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries: Distinguishing Genuine Cases from Simulation
Dr. Roland Torres, Nationally Recognized Neurotrauma and Neurocritical Care Expert, Former Director of Neurotrauma and Associate Professor of Neurosurgery Stanford University Medical School.
Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) and spinal cord injuries (SCIs) are critical public health concerns, with TBIs being a leading cause of disability, morbidity, and mortality, especially among individuals younger than 45 years in developed countries. The primary causes of TBI vary, requiring tailored interventions. Confusion often arises between head injuries (HIs) and TBIs; TBIs involve changes in brain function due to blunt or penetrating force, which may present as subtle behavioral changes in mild cases. Clients may present with visible injuries and disabilities, but the challenge lies in identifying the subtle signs of a traumatic brain injury (TBI) or determining the neurological level of a spinal cord injury (SCI). How can you discern if a client’s symptoms are genuine? This session will provide you with a comprehensive guide to evidence-based management strategies and the scientific principles behind them.

Mass Shootings in America - Is it a Public Health Crisis?
Dr. Roland Torres
This presentation takes a critical look at the phenomenon of mass shootings in the United States, through the unique perspective of a medical doctor, to evaluate whether it constitutes a public health crisis from a medical standpoint. By examining the frequency, impact, and patterns of these tragic events, we aim to explore their profound effects on physical and mental health and the broader implications for healthcare systems and the legal justice system. Without entering the realm of legal debate, we will consider how medical professionals can contribute to the judiciary with a multidisciplinary approach to this crisis, leveraging their expertise to influence policy, education, and community initiatives aimed at preventing future tragedies. Our goal is to foster a conversation that bridges the gap between healthcare, the legal system, and societal well-being, encouraging a collaborative approach to tackling what is increasingly seen as a critical public health issue.
