Prof. Dr. Sergey Vasiliev

Sergey Vasiliev is an accomplished academic, currently serving as a Professor of International Law at the Law Faculty of the Open University of the Netherlands. Previously he was an Associate Professor of International, European, and Comparative Criminal Law at the University of Amsterdam. He also served as the Director of the prestigious LLM International Criminal Law (including the Joint Programme with Columbia Law School) and the founding Director of the Amsterdam Center for Criminal Justice within the same institution. His prior academic appointments include an assistant professorship of Public International Law at the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies, Leiden University, where he taught international (criminal) law and international law practice from 2016 to 2019.

Dr. Vasiliev’s extensive research portfolio includes co-authorship of the influential Cambridge University Press textbook An Introduction to International Criminal Law and Procedure (the 4th edition is out in the summer of 2024) and pioneering work on international criminal procedure, (legal) pluralism in international criminal law, and the legitimacy and critiques of international criminal justice.
