Lawyer Wellness – Carpe Diem
Nancy Nolin, LCSW, CAS will be presenting on how to identify symptoms of depression and anxiety that can impact a person’s ability to function efficiently. When Lawyers experience depression and anxiety it may affect every aspect of their personal and professional lives. Nancy will introduce Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to explain how to identity thinking errors and unhelpful thinking issues. Nancy will explain how the human mind can go on automatic pilot and develop a path of negative thinking about oneself, the environment and the future. Attendees will learn to recognize these thinking patterns, as well as CBT techniques for re-framing and restructuring daily thoughts. Resources will be provided for attendees to use once they return home from the training.

Learning the Art of Mindfulness: A Wellness Approach for the Legal Profession
Nancy Nolin, LCSW, CAS is a regular practitioner of mindfulness and meditation. Additionally, she teaches Mindfulness at workshops, conferences and with individuals. Mindfulness means “paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally.” In this workshop, attendees will learn about the research behind the benefits of a mindfulness practice. Additionally, attendees will gain an understanding on how to implement mindfulness skills to reduce stress and anxiety. This is a fun, interactive workshop on the multitude of ways to live mindfully.

According to a 2016 study by the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation and the ABA Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs, 19 percent of lawyers experience anxiety, and 23 percent experience chronic stress. Nancy Nolin, a licensed psychotherapist since 2007, explains how attorneys can recognize the hidden signals of stress and anxiety in their practice. Doing more with less time is a constant struggle, but there are strategies and tools that allow lawyers to take time out of their day to take care of themselves and be a better lawyer because of it. Litigation involves disputes which, by their nature, are stressful. Even the most experienced attorney and well-prepared client can be thrown off-balance by events and questions that trigger strong emotional responses. This interactive session will offer practical strategies and tools to help you assess and support your own and your clients’ wellbeing and work more effectively with people under stress. You will learn how to build and strengthen trusting relationships, identify and refer clients in crisis to supports, and use practical techniques to manage client responses to stress in different phases of litigation.
