Building a Better Brief

The goal of a brief is to persuade the court that your argument is the correct one. This must be done quickly because judges read massive numbers of briefs monthly. Learn how to write from a judge’s perspective not yours. Discover legal writing techniques that produce a concise, coherent brief that appreciates the judge’s time constraints. Master writing skills that reflect what judges want to see in your brief.

The Ethics of Dealing with Juvenile Clients (1 Ethics)

Paula J. Yost

In this presentation mental health counselor and attorney Paula Yost will demonstrate how to deal with generational trauma, differences in age groups, and how to connect families to services. She will go over the signs of a burgeoning mental illness in a child and how your role as a lawyer can set a family up for future success or can contribute to failure. This presentation acts as a reminder of how critically important the work we do is, complete with statistics on how and why children commit crimes.

Client and Attorney Wellness: How to Take Care of You and Your Client

Paula J. Yost

This presentation will explore fun facts about neuroscience, the parasympathetic nervous system, and overall function of the brain as a critical element of our health. We’ll learn about therapy, why it works, how it works, and how to recognize when it’s needed. We’ll also spend real time discussing how to raise that need with clients.

Morocco City Tour

Discover Morocco’s largest city and economic capital, Casablanca, best representation of the modern side of Morocco. Begin the city tour of Casablanca with an outside visit of Hassan II Mosque. It is the largest mosque in the country and the 7th largest in the world. You then continue to the Ain Diab Corniche for a pleasant stroll along the coast. Your next stop is Mohammed V Square in the city center. The city tour also includes the Habous Quarter, one of the oldest areas in Casablanca. The district was built by the French in the 1930s as an attempted solution to the ongoing housing shortage. It marries the best of traditional Moroccan architecture with modern facilities and French ideals – even the mosque fronts onto a strip of grassy lawn just like a village church.

9:00 a.m.

Overnight Tour Casablanca - Rabat – Fez

After breakfast, depart overland along the main highway which links these two major cities towards Rabat. Embark on a city tour which highlights Rabat’s cultural influences and the superbly preserved relics of its Moorish past. Rabat’s most famous site is the Hassan Tower, the incomplete minaret of the great mosque built in the beginning of 12th century. Located alongside is the mausoleum dedicated to Mohamed V, the grandfather of the current king, then the Oudaya Kasbah, built on a bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Its gate is one of the most beautiful surviving from the Moorish world, and within its walls you’ll explore a delightful Moroccan garden. At the conclusion of your sightseeing, continue overland to Fez.

Dinner at Barcelo Hotel Fez

Dinner at Barceló Hotel Fez offers a refined blend of Moroccan and international cuisine in an elegant setting. Enjoy flavorful dishes like tagines, grilled meats, and fresh salads, all served with attentive service for a memorable dining experience.

Overnight Tour of Fez El Bali (Old Fez) and Fez El Jedid (New Fez)

Today, step back into the Middle Ages as you explore the historic heart of Fez, beginning in the old medina, a sprawling UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its maze of souks, bustling artisan quarters, and magnificent medersas that reflect centuries of spiritual and scholarly tradition. Wander through the city’s distinct neighborhoods, each offering its own character, craft, and cultural legacy. Continue to the Jewish Quarter (Mellah), where you’ll visit its historic synagogue and admire unique architectural features—including finely wrought ironwork and carved wooden balconies—that distinguish this district from the rest of the city. You’ll then stop at the Royal Palace, whose grand brass doors and intricate tilework make it one of Fez’s most iconic landmarks.

Your tour also includes a visit to the Borj, the historic fortress that overlooks the city, offering sweeping panoramic views of Fez’s ancient skyline. From here, gain a deeper appreciation of the medina’s vast scale and the layers of history within its walls. After a full day immersed in the traditions, architecture, and vibrant energy of Fez, return to your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

Lunch at Bab Sahra

Lunch at Bab Sahra offers an authentic and relaxing Moroccan dining experience, featuring traditional flavors served in a warm, inviting setting. Enjoy a selection of local dishes—often including fresh salads, tagines, grilled meats, and homemade breads—while taking in the charming ambiance that reflects the spirit of Fez. It’s a perfect mid-day break to savor regional cuisine and recharge before continuing your exploration of the city.

Dinner at Riad Fes

Dinner at Riad Fes provides an elegant three-course culinary experience set in one of the city’s most refined riads, blending Andalusian, Moorish, and contemporary Moroccan design. Guests enjoy expertly crafted dishes made with fresh, local ingredients—often beginning with traditional Moroccan starters, followed by a beautifully prepared main course such as lamb, chicken, or seasonal fish, and finishing with a decadent dessert or fresh Moroccan pastries. The serene, atmospheric setting makes it a memorable and sophisticated end to the day.

Overnight Tour: Fez - Volubilis - Meknes – Fez

Journey overland to explore the Roman ruins of Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is home to some of the best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa. With its triumphal arches, basilicas and capitals, the Volubilis skyline brims with iconic examples of Roman architecture. Among its greatest treasures, however, are the amazing mosaic floors of former family dwellings, which include depictions of Orpheus charming animals with his lyre, nine dolphins signifying good luck and a portrait of Amphitrite in a seahorse-drawn chariot. Continue to Meknes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the imperial cities of Morocco. Meknes is replete with fantastic historical sites, from minarets to museums, to enormous mosaic doors and royal golf courses. Among the most popular attractions are the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, the Nejjardine Mosque and Grand Mosque (outside visit) as well as the Bab Mansour, Bab Lakmis, and Bab Berdaine gates. Return to Fez for an evening at leisure. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Dinner in Fez offers a delightful culinary journey through traditional Moroccan flavors. Enjoy a multi-course meal featuring classic dishes like lamb tagine, couscous, and pastilla, served in a charming setting that reflects the city’s rich heritage. The evening is a perfect blend of authentic cuisine and local ambiance, offering an unforgettable dining experience.

Continued Tour Fez - Ifrane – Marrakech

Today, transfer to Marrakech. We experience the natural & wilder landscapes beyond Fez. Drive to the high alpine region of Ifrane National Park (encompasses Azrou and several Berber villages), filled with cedar and oak forests and home to the world’s largest population of Barbary macaques, hundreds of animals and birds and the oldest tree in Morocco’s Middle Atlas, the 130-foot Gouraud’s Cedar. The largest cedar forest in the world is found in this park, and several lakes or Dayats abound in the nearby areas. The Lion of Ifrane sits majestically in the city center and is certainly one of the most photographed sites of the region. Ifrane feels more like Switzerland relocated to the Middle Atlas than North Africa, with its clean air, scrubbed streets and leafy outlook. The French built it in 1930, deliberately trying to re-create an alpine-style resort. It is a popular summer day trip for picnickers; in the winter, the affluent flock here to ski. Stop for lunch break enroute (on your own) before continuing to Marrakech via the highway your overnight.

Marrakech Sightseeing

Enjoy a full-day guided tour of Marrakech, Morocco’s legendary “Red City,” celebrated for its vibrant history, distinctive red-stone architecture, and lively medina. Begin your exploration at the Bahia Palace, a masterpiece of 19th-century design filled with ornate mosaics, carved cedar ceilings, and tranquil courtyards. Continue to the beautifully restored Secret Garden, an oasis hidden within the medina that showcases traditional Islamic garden design. Visit the Koutoubia Mosque, whose iconic minaret dominates the city skyline and stands as a hallmark of Almohad architecture. Your tour then leads to the Medersa Ben Youssef, once one of North Africa’s most important centers of learning, admired for its intricate stucco work, zellij tiles, and serene courtyard. Explore the Jewish Quarter (Mellah), known for its unique layout and cultural heritage, before winding through the old medina’s bustling souks and historic neighborhoods. After a day immersed in Marrakech’s rich culture and architectural splendor, return to your hotel for the evening.

Dinner at Chez Ali offers a lively and immersive Moroccan evening, featuring a traditional feast served in a colorful, Berber-style setting. Ethical Concerns When Representing Mentally Ill Clients (2 Ethics)

Almost every lawyer will encounter a mentally ill client at some point. How this is managed can vary based on local ethical requirements. However, one constant is the way that mental illnesses often present themselves. This presentation will cover topics like when to ask for guardianship, how to keep yourself safe, how to try to make sure your client understands what is happening, knowing when it is time to withdraw, and how to seek support along the way. We’ll walk-through real-life examples of hypothetical situations involving clients and how to manage them.

An oral argument must be a conversation. It’s not enough to deliver an argument from memory or read from notes. Judges have read the briefs and want to hone in quickly on their concerns. All this means that the appellate lawyer must feel comfortable talking about the case. You must have a feel for what it’s like to talk about the case and to answer questions on the fly. Learn techniques and insights to strengthen your oral argument.
