This session is ideal for attorneys representing guardians, serving as guardians ad litem, or advising families navigating the complexities of mental health and disability law.

This discussion will focus on the ethical considerations and implications of communications between judges and attorneys. What is ex-parte communication? What are the rules of engagement in a social setting? This discussion will include a brief review of your individual state’s Rules of Professional Conduct relative to this issue and will include specific scenarios for discussion.

Dana Ewell and Joel Radovcich were college students at Santa Clara University. Dana hired Joel to murder his entire family; his mother, father and sister, to inherit the estate. In today’s dollars, the estate would be valued at more than $18,000,000. The Ewell family was a prominent family who lived in Central California. Joel gunned down all three family members with an assault rifle that had a homemade silencer on it as they arrived home on an Easter Sunday. The entire trial was broadcast live on the radio. Mr. Hammerschmidt was one of two prosecutors on the case. The case has been featured on numerous national crime shows. Netflix has expressed interest in running a six-part series on the case.
