The session highlights how exercise reduces stress, sharpens cognition, boosts decision-making, and supports emotional resilience—key components of competent legal practice.

Lawyering with Empathy: How Trauma-Informed Practices Boost Competence and Resilience (1 Ethics)

This course explores how trauma—both personal and vicarious—can affect an attorney’s performance, decision-making, competence, and ethical obligations. Attendees will gain a foundational understanding of how trauma impacts the brain and behavior, recognize indicators of trauma in themselves, and learn how to apply trauma-informed strategies that promote competence, professionalism, and well-being. The session introduces a six-step trauma-informed framework that individuals and organizations can use to strengthen resilience and client service. This presentation is relevant to all attorneys and legal professionals, with particular value for those practicing in areas that frequently involve exposure to traumatic events, including family law, criminal law, personal injury, immigration, civil rights, bankruptcy, trusts and estates, and related fields.
