Matthew B. Ingalls

Middle Eastern Studies, Prof

Matthew is Associate Professor of Middle Eastern Studies and Chair of the Department of International and Middle Eastern Studies at the American University in Dubai. He received his master’s degree in Arabic Studies at the American University in Cairo and his doctorate in Islamic Studies from Yale University. Before joining the AUD faculty in the fall of 2016, Matthew taught Islamic Studies and Religious Studies at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, USA. He’s currently writing a university textbook on Islamic civilization for Bloomsbury Press.

    Jump into the history, future, and culture of Dubai in this presentation by the Chair of the Department of International and Middle Eastern Studies at American University in Dubai. Dr. Ingalls will present a basic primer on the last 200 years in Dubai, and its many defining features. Using his extensive expertise, he will offer his opinions on where Dubai’s path might lead in the coming decades.

  • Islamic Courts in Pre-Modern Times vs. Today

    Dr. Ingalls will walk us through the workings of pre-modern Islamic courts, including which aspects have carried forward to the modern judicial system. He’ll then show how they functioned while focusing on what distinguishes them from contemporary courts of law in the modern era of the nation-state.
