What are the best things to do in Carolina, Puerto Rico right now?

The options are truly limitless in this beautiful city. Here’s a list of 10 of our favorite things to do in Carolina, Puerto Rico:

1.   Try Out Different Food

Street food in Puerto Rico is by far one of the best things about this gorgeous island! We recommend taking a day to stroll the ocean drive between Carolina and Loíza to check out more than a dozen local restaurants and food kiosks.

If you’re looking for a truly local meal while you’re in PR, make sure you stop by Piñones. This neighborhood in Caolina is known for having the best alcapurrias, which is a fritter made of bananas, taro root, and meat (similar to a meat pie).

If you enjoy seafood, there’s a plethora of restaurants to choose from in this area.

Finally, grab yourself some mofongo while you’re here—a traditional cuisine made from mashed plantains with either pork or chicken and seasoned with spices.

2.   Learn About the Culture

If you love learning about different cultures, don’t miss out on visiting the Cultural District! Here you can go to the Museum of History and Art, the Giants Gallery Museum, the Puerto Rican Poster and Graphics Museum, and many more.

Plus, you can even bring your kids here! The Cultural District in Carolina also has the Museo del Niño with over 100+ interactive exhibits, games, and even a go-kart track!

Naturally, Puerto Rico’s local culture is simply brimming with monuments, historical stories, and interesting buildings.

About a half hour away from Carolina, you can travel the cobblestone steps of Old San Juan. This city is one of the oldest historical sites in Puerto Rico. Here, you can also visit Castillo San Felipe del Morro, Castillo San Cristóbal, La Fortaleza, and Casa Blanca. Of course, you’ll also find plenty of unique stores and gift shops filled with handmade Puerto Rican treasures for your souvenirs!

Similar to Carolina, the entire city of San Juan is overflowing with Puerto Rican culture. As the capital and the largest city in Puerto Rico, you can find a plethora of cultural experiences in this lively city, only 30 minutes from Carolina. From countless festivals and events throughout the year to the fabulous dining and live music experiences downtown, there’s always something exciting happening in San Juan!

3.   Visit El Yunque National Forest

The El Yunque Rainforest is a must-see destination when you’re in Puerto Rico. If you enjoy the outdoors, El Yunque National Rainforest offers a lot of activities for families, couples, or friends.

One of the best things to do here is to go for a rainforest nature walk coupled with strolling to Luquillo Beach to try out the food kiosks. The rainforest is also a great place to try the JungleQui Zipline Park, if you’re up for an adventure!

4.   Check Out the Bioluminescent Bays

Did you know that Puerto Rico has three of the five bioluminescent bays in the entire world?! These bays emit a glow-in-the-dark effect when dinoflagellates (a special type of algae) are stimulated.

To see one of these magnificent bays, you can go to Mosquito Bay in Vieques Island, which is about three hours from Carolina. Plus, after Hurricane Maria hit PR in 2017, the concentration of dinoflagellates seemed to double, which has made the bay extra bright.

Located in Fajardo, Laguna Bay is one of the most visited bio bays in Puerto Rico. Though technically not a bay, this lagoon is just about an hour away from Carolina.

Finally, you can also go to Lajas to experience the glowing bay of La Parguera. This one is about a three-hour drive from Carolina. Since this bio bay can only be reached by motorboats, make sure to book your trip here in advance so you can have a hassle-free experience.

5.   Learn While Touring!

Did you know that Puerto Rico is also a popular destination for lawyers who are completing their CLE requirements? Plus, one of the best things about Puerto Rico is that you don’t need to exchange your US Dollars for any local currency when you’re out partying!

7.   Visit a Countryside Hacienda

Outdoor enthusiasts simply can’t miss taking a tour around Hacienda Campo Rico! Here you can find ATV adventures, ziplines, and horseback riding, among other experiences. You can also join a trolley tour to learn more about the hacienda’s rich history as a former sugar cane plantation in Carolina. Then, end the day with drinks at the Mojito Bar right there on the property.

8.   Beach, Please!

Of course, we would be remiss not to mention the stunning beaches Carolina, Puerto Rico has to offer. Located between Alambique Beach and Carolina Public Beach, Pine Grove Beach boasts fantastic waves for the experienced surfer. It’s one of the best beaches to learn how to surf because there are a lot of nearby businesses that offer surfing lessons and surfboard rentals.

Similarly, Vivo Beach Club, located in Isla Verde Beach, is a resort popular for hosting concerts. Though it’s also filled with pools and restaurants, the main attraction is Ocean Lab Brewing Co. If you enjoy craft beer and delicious food, make sure to add Ocean Lab Brewing Co. to your itinerary!

Isla Verde Reef is also one of the most beautiful places in Carolina. It’s a designated marine life reserve that protects a coral reef ecosystem. Here, you can expect to see sea turtles, manatees, and protected coral species in this area.

Also, you can enjoy a variety of water sports, water parks for kids of all ages, and a friendly game of beach volleyball in Balneario de Carolina. This award-winning beach has clear waters and spectacular views for your day trip. Not surprisingly, Balneario de Carolina has been named the best urban beach in Puerto Rico!

And, about an hour away from Carolina, Flamenco Beach is probably one of the most popular beaches in the world. The white sands aren’t the only highlight—it also has the most picturesque tortoise calm waters. Plus, the beach houses two historical army tanks that are now covered with artistic graffiti.

9.   Bring the Kids to an Aquatic Park

Cool off the kids at Aquasol Park, otherwise known as Parque Acuático Infantil Aquasol in Spanish. This aquatic park has slides and fountains for kids to enjoy all day long. If you want to rest in between your excursions and give the kids a chance to play, we highly recommend you try out the Aquasol Park in Carolina.

10.  Sunflowers and Instagram!

If you enjoy Insta-worthy photos, a trip to Girasolero is sure to pay off. This location is a plant nursery with a sunflower field and many different animals. Aside from the multitude of flowers, among the popular attractions at this farm is Jacob—a cow that you can pet and take photos with.
